Lanyard Types

The design you want on your lanyard should be based on sound marketing. We assume here that you are using the lanyards to convey a message. If not then ignore this and pick a color that will work for you and go for it.

If you are trying to use them to gain new business or bring attention to an organization's event or cause then the following is very relevant.

First determine who you want the message to be conveyed to!

If it is the person who receives the lanyard then material choice, colors, text or logo on the lanyard can be more complex and richer. Why because all of these factors will be readily apparent to this person. Better quality material will provide a strong sense of pleasure to the touch. Intricate colors and details will be appreciated because the viewer is close up. Here is where fine woven double layered lanyards using silk would be great. It feels rich to the touch and very complex designs can be woven into the lanyard. Also go with good attachments such as stainless steel clips or hooks. However cheap it is not.

If your plan is to maximize the marketing message then you have to think differently. Intricate details obvious to the wearer will not be from 6 feet away and walking past you. Logos will be impossible to make out and understood in the brief time the lanyard is in view and the material type will not be noticeable.

Choose bold colors for the text with solid contrasting lanyard backgrounds so the text stands out. In our mind there is nothing worse than getting the colors wrong so the message is lost in the background. Choose Black on Red or White on Black, something like that. If your design includes a symbol or logo make sure the logo complements the message and is not the message unless the logo is dead simple to understand from a distance. Yes we know you need to brand your business or Organization's logo and you spend a ton of money getting done just the way you want it but they don’t always work on moving small objects like lanyards.

The font on text needs to be easy to read. Fancy scrolling text looks cool when your designing it but is impossible to read on the move. Stay with Arial or Verdana etc.

Attachments ensure the user keeps the lanyard on because of its’ versatility. No attachments and they only wear it for the event or at the time of receiving it and then throw it in the closet. Bolos on the lanyard will stop it from constantly falling forward annoying the wearer and breakaway lanyards ensure that the wearer doesn't get sucked into machinery. An attachment that unclips easily so whatever is attached to the end can be readily used is a joy. Don’t go too cheap here though as the lanyard wearer needs to feel that the object on the end of the lanyard will not fall off easily.

Think about your requirements before approaching the lanyard company and be objective about these things plus stick to the plan like we described above. The outcome will be worth it.
